Blogmas Day #4: Seasonal Shoebox

Hi guys!

I hope you're all doing good. I'm loving Blogmas so far and how much fun it is to put all the posts together, but I thought today's could be a little bit more serious, as it's very relevant to Christmas and I'm currently taking part right now.

Operation Christmas Child reach out to people and kindly ask them to donate things to fill up a shoebox, for a child less fortunate of a certain age range and gender. The list of appropriate things you can include are on the website, such as cuddly toys or hair bands. I've been taking part in this since Primary School, in the past doing full shoeboxes myself, although the past two years in sixth form we've collaboratively done it as forms, with one person bringing an item in to contribute. I always tend to go for the fun options, last year contributing a cuddly toy and this year some playing cards!

It's so dead easy, you can contribute one item like we have to do this year, or craft whole shoeboxes full of goodies like I have done in the past. I adore this idea, because opposed to giving money, you can actually see for yourself what you will be giving to someone. I've been shown SO many videos over the years of these less fortunate children opening their shoeboxes to beaming smiles, and that reaction is just priceless.

So yeah I thought I'd share this with you as I've been involved with it for so many years! If you have a shoebox lying around and think this good cause would interest you, then feel free to check out: http://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/how-to-pack-a-shoebox/. I believe them mentioning at school that the deadline was very soon for sending one off yourself, but if not then they do a virtual shoebox thing online where you can make one.

So that's it for Blogmas day four, sharing a bit of a good deed. Have you ever participated before? If not then do you planning on doing any good deeds over Christmas? Or do you simply get a buzz off buying gifts for other people, knowing it will make them happy?

Thanks for reading,

Jade xx

  1. I was waiting for my school to promote it this year but they haven't, and seeing this post has just reminded me that I should probably get on with it but the deadline to send in boxes has past :( I've been doing this for about 10 years now so I'm really disappointed that I didn't get to join in!

    1. Aw no way, that's such a shame! I still think you can do a virtual box thing, but it's the thought that counts, so maybe next year!
